Form I-94 is the arrival and departure record maintained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. It documents your dates of entry to and exit from the United States — which is exactly what foreign tax authorities and immigration offices want when they're deciding your tax residency or counting your days abroad.

What a Form I-94 record is

CBP creates an I-94 record when a non-citizen is admitted to the United States, and it maintains a travel history of arrivals and departures. The record shows admission dates, class of admission, and the period of authorized stay. Because it's generated and held by a federal agency, it authenticates through the U.S. Department of State rather than any state office.

Two things are available from CBP: the most recent I-94 and the travel history (typically the last several years of crossings). Which one you need depends on what the foreign authority asked for.

Why it needs an apostille abroad

A foreign tax office can't verify a U.S. border record on its own. The apostille certifies the CBP record as genuine across the 120-plus Hague Convention countries. Non-Hague destinations need that authentication plus embassy or consulate legalization.

Retrieving your record from CBP

Go to CBP's I-94 website and retrieve your record using your passport details. You can pull your most recent I-94 and your travel history, and print the official record directly. There is no charge.

Once you have the printed record, send it to us and we take it through apostille. Because this is a self-printed federal record, the exact form matters — send us what you've printed and we'll confirm it before submission.

Document preparation requirements

• Don't reformat, edit, annotate, or highlight the printout.
• Check that the record covers the date range the foreign authority requested.
• Confirm whether they want the most recent I-94, the travel history, or both.
• Don't notarize it — notarizing a federal record invalidates it for authentication.
